Men Unlearning Violence

A Good Idea

Description

Men in Progress, a weekly drop-in violence intervention support group, helps men acknowledge their own violence and help each other learn a new way of relating. The program helps men identify behaviors such as emotional coercion, manipulation of resources, and stonewalling as forms of violence and works to undo the internalized destructive beliefs about what it means to be a man in this society. The support groups are designed and run by men who have undergone a facilitator training program that focuses on reducing violence, much of it in the form of coercion through the control of resources, verbal abuse, and emotional manipulation. To participate, men must agree to acknowledge their own violence and set an intention to stop it, or be court-ordered to participate.

Goal / Mission

Men Unlearning Violence helps men transform their relationships with people and with themselves by learning to respond instead of react, and replacing control with intimacy.

Results / Accomplishments

Men Unlearning Violence continues to help men overcome their coercive and violent habits on an ongoing basis.
