Description

The Bricklayers and Laborers Nonprofit Housing Corp. was founded by a local construction union to create affordable housing targeted for low- and moderate-income first-time home buyers in downtown Boston. The Back of the Hill project created 165 rowhouses in at a previously idle property. The Charlestown Navy Yard project created 50 affordable townhouses at a vacant former industrial site on the waterfront. All units were priced at cost, below the city median housing cost of $170,000. Costs were kept down through city housing subsidies, a land donation from a private medical foundation, leveraged union pension funds, and other strategies. Not only are the units affordable, they have won several architectural awards and have encouraged a sense of community for their residents.

Goal / Mission

The goal of this program is to create affordable housing targeted for low- and moderate-income first-time home buyers in downtown Boston.

Results / Accomplishments

As a result of this program, 215 affordable housing units were sold at cost to low- and moderate-income persons.
