Learn, Taste, and Share

An Effective Practice

Description

Learn, Taste and Share is a diabetes education program focused on nutrition and diabetes. The program included four 2-hour sessions. These sessions were held at a local church and included games with prizes, giveaways, and either a cooking demonstration or cooking participation. The first session focused on fiber, the second session involved a grocery store tour and the last two sessions provided more time for hands-on cooking experiences.

Goal / Mission

The primary goal of this program was to increase attendance at education sessions. The program ultimately aimed to improve dietary habits of adult African American females.

Results / Accomplishments

Over 4 series, 120 people participated in the program. A significant decreased of mean glycohemoglobin was observed in participants between an initial visit and a 6-month follow up period (12.1% to10.8%, p=0.002). High levels of enthusiasm and an interest in learning was observed in participants.
