Description
The RESPECT: Brief Counseling plus Booster intervention is a one-on-one sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention program that builds upon the RESPECT intervention. The initial program includes two brief counseling sessions; the RESPECT plus Booster incorporates an additional follow-up session 6 months later. HIV counselors work with sexually active, HIV-negative, STD clinic patients to identify personal risk factors. During counseling sessions participants develop an achievable personalized risk-reduction plan and learn behavioral strategies for safer sex. The additional booster session reinforces previous counseling, reviews and revises the risk-reduction plan, and identifies sources of support for patients.
Goal / Mission
The goal of RESPECT: Brief Counseling plus Booster intervention is to reduce sex risk behaviors and decrease new STD infection.
Results / Accomplishments
Participants in the initial two brief counseling sessions had a significantly lower rate of new STD infection than a control group (p < 0.05). RESPECT participants were significantly more likely to report no unprotected vaginal intercourse in the 5 months following intervention than those in the control group (p < 0.05). In addition, the RESPECT: Brief Counseling plus Booster intervention group showed reduced sexual risk when compared to a the group that received only the two initial comparison sessions but no booster session. A significantly smaller percentage of intervention participants reported the following risk behaviors: more than two sex partners, unprotected sex with non-primary partner, sex with a new partner on day of meeting, and sex with a one-time partner (all p’s < 0.05).
