This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate per 100,000 people due to major cardiovascular diseases.
Why is this important?
Cardiovascular disease refers to a variety of heart and blood vessel diseases, including coronary heart disease, hypertension, and stroke. The major forms of cardiovascular disease are caused by atherosclerosis, a progressive thickening and stiffening of the inner layers of artery walls. Atherosclerosis has been linked to many risk factors, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, tobacco use, physical inactivity, diabetes, overweight, and obesity. Atherosclerosis begins in childhood, leading to the clinical manifestation of cardiovascular disease in middle age. Coronary heart disease and stroke are the leading cause of mortality due to cardiovascular disease.
