Project Health Education Awareness Research Team (HEART)

An Effective Practice

Description

Participants included individuals with at least one cardiovascular disease risk factor residing in El Paso, Texas. Project HEART participants attended 8 weekly heath education classes over two months using the Su Corazón, Su Vida curriculum. Classes were led by trained promotores and lasted approximately 2 hours. Following classes, participants received 3 phone calls and participated in a small group session to discuss changes made as a result of the sessions, and discussed further changes.

Goal / Mission

The objective of Project HEART (Health Education Awareness Research Team) was to promote behavior changes to decrease cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in a high-risk Hispanic border population.

Results / Accomplishments

Compared to a control group that only received educational materials, program participants had a significant improvement in self reported behaviors including weight control (P=0.01), salt intake (P <0.001), and cholesterol and fat intake (p=0.01). Participants also showed more confidence in controlling CVD risk factors (P=0.01).
