Program: “Centro Mater Walker Park Fruit & Vegetable Garden”
Approximate Number of Participants: 360
Centro Mater at Walker Park Fruit and Vegetable Garden Project will set out to establish a new gardening program on the grounds of the facility. The center will grow fresh, healthy and organic fruits and vegetables to be used and enjoyed by the children. The children will use the food they grow to prepare simple, tasty meals they will share with their families.

Program: “Salud y Salsa”
Approximate Number of Participants: 360
“Salud y Salsa” is designed to engage families and promote healthy lifestyles in a manner consistent with their culture and environment. Behavior interventions will be used to reduce screen time through classes aimed at improving children’s and parents’ knowledge, attitude or skills.

Program: “Healthy Lifestyle @ your Library”

The “Healthy Lifestyle @ your Library” initiative is designed to educate Hialeah children and families about healthy cooking and food options and foster positive lifestyle changes. The goal is to instill lifelong nutritious food choices and provide the families of the community access to fresh, wholesome food and recipes. A monthly cooking class, “Eat Right Family Night”, will be offered by a culinary expert.

Program: “Fitness in the Park”

Casas Park’s “Fitness in the Park” program will allow staff to combine physical fitness conditioning into their current recreational programs. They will install physical fitness stations at fixed intervals throughout the park.
Program: EPI “Healthy Eating Club”
Approximate Number of Participants: 250
The goal of this program is to introduce healthy lifestyles and healthy food choices to youth through the established Early Prevention and Intervention Program. Nutrition classes will be eight-week sessions will be conducted by the Cordon Bleu and offered throughout the year. Each EPI class is made-up of up to 50 students between the ages of 12 and 17; five semesters.
Program: “Hialeah Running and Track Club”
Approximate Number of Participants: 80+
The “Hialeah Running and Track Club” in conjunction with the experienced running coach from “Coach to First Class” will offer residents an opportunity to train, compete and socialize with other area residents who share an interest in running, jogging and walking. There will be two-hour sessions held three-days a week.
Program: “O’Quinn Park Virtual Fitness Area”

O’Quinn Park’s “Virtual Fitness” program, in conjunction with Nova Southeastern University, will provide an interactive gaming and fitness experience where children can play computer games that encourage physical activity.
Program: “Wilde Community Dance Center”
Approximate Number of Participants: 240 students
The “Wilde Community Dance Center” classes will be an extension to an existing municipal cultural arts program. The dance classes will be 5 days week engaging approximately 240 students from ages 6-17 in several dance styles. The classes will be geared towards motivating the participants to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.

Program: “Cooking Skills and World Cuisine” with Common Threads
Approximate Number of Participants: 32
Common Threads partners with schools and community centers to provide cooking courses for low-income, at-risk, students aimed at enriching children's lives with healthy food knowledge and cooking skills in a fun, accessible classroom environment that fosters an appreciation of cultural diversity through cooking. A collaborative agreement to partner with Common Threads as a subcontractor is in place.
Organization: Embrace Girls Foundation
Program: “Embracing a Healthier You” for Embrace Girl Power! After School Programs & Camps
Approximate Number of Participants: 100+
The “Embracing a Healthier You” initiative will encourage young girls (mostly minority children) enrolled in the Embrace Girl Power afterschool program (25+) and their mothers to shop for, prepare, and eat healthy food; exercise; and visit their healthy care provider. The children in this program are low-income and have a higher rate of risk for obesity than the national average.

Program: Cooking Matters for Families

The Cooking Matters program, a national Share our Strength evidenced-based program, is delivered locally in Florida by FLIPANY. Cooking Matters for Families brings school-aged children and their families together to learn about healthy eating, planning meals as a family, and working together in the kitchen. This curriculum is also available in Spanish (as Cooking Matters Para Familias).

Program: “Hialeah Healthy Families Community Page”
Approximate Number of Participants: 10,000 probable to be served of the 240,000 population of Hialeah
The Health Council of South Florida (Council) proposes to build an online community page for the BCBS Embrace a Healthy Florida project in Hialeah. Hosted on the existing Miami Matters website, a publicly available, online information system of the Council accessed at www.miamidadematters.org, the Hialeah Healthy Families Community Page is a platform for disseminating project information.
Organization: Hialeah Elementary School
Program: “Hialeah Elementary School’s Kids Making Healthy Choices”
Approximate Number of Participants: 765
Hialeah Elementary School will increase students’ awareness of childhood obesity by increasing physical activity. Aerobic classes, flag football, volleyball, basketball, hip-hop dance and other activities will be offered to students for at least 75-minutes a week.

Program: “Preschool Food Gardens”
Approximate Number of Participants: 400+
Human Services Coalition, in collaboration with the Alliance for Early Care and Education, will design and implement healthy food gardens in eight preschools in Hialeah. The food garden project will create organic food gardens at the schools which will be used by the centers and their children in conjunction with the Organ Wise Guys Curriculum.

Program: “Fuel for the Journey through School: Healthy eating for Healthy Minds and Bodies”

Knowledge Building in Action will partner with Hialeah Middle School to produce an organic garden project blending hands-on gardening with science-based education.
Organization: Miami Dade College – Hialeah Campus
Program: “Childhood Obesity Awareness Campaign”
Approximate Number of Participants: 3000+ students
Miami Dade College will target 3000 students and community members through a week-long series of event that will include lectures, films, cooking demonstrations and dissemination of educational materials via print and social media. Additionally, twenty-five families will be identified to participate in an event which includes culinary experts presenting healthy cooking options and will provide recipe and food samples.
Organization: Palm Springs Elementary School
Program: “Healthy Minds through Healthy Bodies”
Approximate Number of Participants: 850
“Healthy Minds through Healthy Bodies” will expand the current project which has been exposing student to samples of a variety of fruits and vegetables to broaden healthier food choices. It will implement a fitness component as well as community involvement though family projects that will include also include school personnel.
Organization: South Florida Autism Charter School (SFACS)
Program: “Obesity Awareness and Prevention Program”
Approximate Number of Participants: 375
Children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may be at additional risk factors for being overweight or obese. SFACS will incorporate a new initiative, Obesity Awareness & Prevention, into their curriculum. It will target students enrolled in the school, as well as their families, by monitoring the weight/BMI of our students and providing, education, hands-on training, and support to our students and their families. Additionally, through the Saturday workshop series, all Hialeah families who have children on the autism spectrum will be targeted.

Program: “Parenting for Healthy Family Lifestyle Habits” in Hialeah through the Mailman Center
Approximate Number of Participants: 100-125
This program is designed to provide parents with knowledge and skills related to healthy family lifestyles. Targeted groups will be Hispanic/Spanish Speaking parents of pre-school-aged and school-aged children, as well as parents of young adolescents.

Program: “Westland Wellness”
Approximate Number of Participants: 250 students
“Westland Wellness” will offer 250 low-income middle and high school students and their family on-site and out-of-school learning opportunities in nutrition and physical fitness. San Ignacio Culinary College will conduct healthy cooking demonstrations in English and Spanish for students and parents. San Ignacio Culinary College will also conduct a series of lectures on the importance of healthy eating and exercise habits.
