An Effective Practice
Description
The SmartWay Transport Partnership is a voluntary collaboration between U.S. EPA and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution. The EPA has established incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. SmartWay Transport Partners lead the way towards a cleaner, more efficient transportation future by adopting fuel-saving strategies that increase profits and reduce emissions -- a "win-win" opportunity for all.
Goal / Mission
The goal of this partnership is to improve the environmental performance and fuel efficiency of the US freight sector (truck & rail) through the use of a voluntary market incentive system and to encourage retailers/end users to choose trucking and/or rail companies that are environmental leaders in their respective industry segments.
Results / Accomplishments
By 2012, the SmartWay Transport Partnership will cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 33 to 66 million metric tons per year, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 200,000 tons per year. It will save about $9 billion in fuel costs and as much as 150 million barrels of oil per year-enough oil to heat 17 million houses for 1 year. This is the same as removing up to 12 million cars off the road annually.
