Description
The Triple P - Positive Parenting Program is an internationally implemented system of parenting interventions for families with children ages 0-8. The program aims to: (1) promote the independence and health of families, (2) promote the development of non-violent, protective environments for children, (3) promote the development of children, (4) reduce the incidence of child abuse, mental illness, behavioral problems, delinquency and homelessness, and (5) enhance the competence, resourcefulness and self-sufficiency of parents in raising their children.
Program components include parenting seminars, parent skills-training sessions, and individual consultations. The quantity of service is adjusted according to a family's need and are delivered by a variety of social, education, and healthcare providers. Triple P messages are reinforced through media strategies, such as news stories, newsletters, and radio announcements, promoting positive parenting throughout the community.

Goal / Mission
Triple P aims to prevent maltreatment and behavioral, emotional and developmental problems in children by strenghtening the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents.
Impact
The program found a 25-35% reduction in child maltreatment, child maltreatment related hospitalizations and injuries, and foster home placements of children for young children at two-year followup of the program.
Results / Accomplishments
A randomized controlled trial was used to evaluate a county-wide implementation of the Triple P program. Eighteen medium-sized South Carolina counties were randomly assigned to program or control group. At the two-year follow-up, the Triple P counties, as compared to the control counties, showed a 25% reduction in the rate of substantiated child maltreatment and a 33% reduction in the rate of out-of-home placements both effects of which were significant at the 0.05 level. The study also found a 35% reduction of hospitalizations or emergency room visits for child maltreatment injuries, which was significant only at the 0.1 level.
